And the Winner is….! Draft Logo #3!

I posted several ideas on FB for friends and family to vote on–this is the winner! I love cycling on my red bike, and here carrying on with the red stethoscope theme (albeit its not beaded)!

I ‘drew’ the girl and bike using shapes in PowerPoint and mocked-up an overall logo concept. I saved it as a jpeg, and uploaded it to Illustrator to use as a template. I added the stethoscope with the curved pen and circle shapes. I did try to put ear tips on it but they ended up being so small I left them off.

I used a lot of gradient features. The girl was easy-ish to create but I needed to think of some way of making her appear older. I have gray hair–it’s lighter near the scalp as it grows out. I recreated the concept by using the linear gradient with gray and black. The face was uncolored, then white, and still looked odd. From our tutorials, I wondered if there was a skin tone color I could directly put in directly as a number. I googled ideas and from the Adobe suggestions, used edd2b3 with white on a gradient. The cheeks are a linear gradient of orchid pattern pink and white.

The tires have a gradient color of red and black, but I also duplicated the set in gray and black behind to give the tires some depth, in the same venue as what we did for depth on the pad and check mark in the notepad tutorial.

I used blue 29abe2 and white for the logo background. I thought this blue looked especially like a blue you would see on a globe–kind of ‘worldly’ to go with the travel theme.

I used ‘type on a curve’ for the text, and Myriad Pro font. Illustrator font defaults to this font–I tried other fonts for my other logo attempts but actually liked this font for this one.

For a self critique, I think the girl may be too youthful for “Old Travel Nurse.” Many of the lines (her head, the circle) could be thinner, and the lines better matched (leg, bike parts). I do have ideas for edits but thought I would wait to see what others thought first.

Frances, your design makes me smile. It truly matches your energy and characteristics. I love the use of elements that are important to you (your bike, the stethoscope). I think if you want to make the girl seem less youthful, maybe you could add line small lines around the eyes to maybe be wrinkles? I do also agree that there are a few lines that could be better matched, like her leg. It doesn’t quite connect to the circle that is the hips of the girl. Also I would maybe consider having the “Old Travel Nurse” only appear around the image on the top and the bottom similar to how Megan spaced out her text in her logo. Overall, love the logo and can’t wait to see how you finalize it.

Thank you so much! I was thinking of little lines around the eyes, too! I will look into how to do that! I appreciate your suggestions!

Hi Frances! I really like your design. It’s clear that a lot of hard work went into creating it. I also appreciate the fact that you use multiple platforms to bring the design together, it’s truly a work of art. Your attention to detail and creativity are evident, and I’m sure the final product will be awesome. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to making this unique and beautiful design. As for a few edits that I would personally make, I would find a way to separate old travel nurse every time that you write it around whether that be with a dot or a dash because when I initially saw this logo I was reading “travel nurse old” simply because that’s what was in the center and the top. I agree with your edit on making the figure look a little more “old” just to match and correlate with the title. I also like that you mentioned the blue that you used to represent that earthly color. With that being said I wonder if you were to draw on the green parts of how you view the globe if it would better this logo. Good work, I am excited to see the final outcome!

Thank you, Ebany! I did think of, and even fooled around with, trying to draw the green “land” parts on the globe–with that concept. I tried to draw the continents free-hand with the pen and it looked a mess. I tried to find a non-copyrighted globe–there is a version as an image in PowerPoint… I might get away with free-handing a drawing and uploading it as a template to trace around. Anyway, my lack of continent-drawing skills made that a bust. Everyone has suggested that I do something with the print, so I definitely will. Thank you for all of your thoughtful suggestions!

    Hi Frances!
First off, this logo has such a nice spirit to it — much like its creator! I commend you, totally, for drawing this (especially in Powerpoint!). The pen tool gives me so much trouble, so I am just totally impressed. I also love how its inspired by your red bike, and it totally tells the story of a traveling nurse for me! I like your thoughtful color choices, and I think they work.

    A couple of suggestions:
    1. I wonder if you could simplify the drawing a bit, to make it easier to scale. For example, instead of having the body and the bike seat, I think you can combine them. Additionally, perhaps the stethoscope and hand can be combined in some way, or layered on top of each other. I think we can certainly make out the elements of the drawing, even with some lines combined or omitted.
    2. I would consider adding in a period or dash between the repeated “old travel nurse” just to make it easier to read! I also think that the drawing could work on its own without the circle and with “old travel nurse” text underneath as a standalone or version of the logo too – but that’s just food for thought. I think a version like that could be super versatile for different uses like on clothing, watermarks or letterheads.
Great job, Francis! Looking forward to seeing more 

Hi, Megan! I completely understand what you are saying about taking out some lines or otherwise simplifying the drawing (the overall effect, as it were). I will definitely look at seeing what I can come up with in that vein. Everyone has suggested doing something to simplify the print around the circle, so I will do that. As a matter of fact, Sarah suggested I do something along the lines of what you have in your logo. I’m so grateful for your expert eye!
